Carol Leroy is the Director of the Reading and Language Centre at the University of Alberta. She teaches courses in the literacy area in the Department of Elementary Education and her research focuses on literacy programs for children considered to be at risk because of their social circumstances.

The purpose of the current study was to learn about the school culture and program support of a well-established and successful literacy-based mentorship program in an urban elementary school whose population is largely comprised of children living in poverty.
